When construction sites are located roadside, both workers and drivers face serious danger.
Car accidents in construction zones can result in serious injury and death. Who is at fault truly depends on the situation. Sometimes the construction company can be at fault, a lack of signage or the motorist.
Below are common reasons for car accidents occurring in construction zones:
- Unsafe road and pavement conditions. During construction, pavement is uneven. When this occurs, proper signs should indicate that the pavement is uneven so that motorists are not caught off guard. This is required by the state.
- Poor signage. Construction managers are required to let motorists know ahead of time that they need to slow down when approaching a construction site. The state and/or local government is also responsible for determining where signs should be placed and how many should be used. If an accident occurs and it is determined that signage was not properly placed, the construction company or government entity may be held responsible.
- Sharp turns. Sometimes construction areas require motorists to switch lanes quickly or make sharp turns. Motorists must be warned ahead of time so they are not taken off guard. Sometimes the motorist is liable if they refuse to take proper precaution after seeing the warnings and therefore cause an accident.
- Debris in area. It’s vital that the debris resulting from construction be picked up so that motorists do not run it over and to prevent debris from hitting a passing car causing the motorist to swerve.
