Toyota has been an increasingly popular vehicle brand across the United States due to its durability, dependability and fuel economy. Their vehicles are able to withstand extreme conditions, making them an ideal choice for urban, suburban and rural dwellers.
But Toyota had to issue its largest recall ever last week due to floor mats potentially interfering with the accelerator pedal. Nearly 4 million Toyota and Lexus models are affected.
A fatal accident in southern California involving an off-duty police officer first sparked concern something was going on. Investigators determined the Lexus ES 350 the office had on loan from a San Diego dealership lost control when the gas pedal was caught by the floor mat.
Until a permanent solution can be found, Toyota is instructing owners of the following models to remove their driver’s side floor mats.
- 2006-2010 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350
- 2007-2010 Lexus ES 350
- 2004-2009 Toyota Prius
- 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon
- 2005-2010 Toyota Tacoma
- 2007-2010 Toyota Camry
- 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra
Toyota suggests the following if you find yourself in a situation where your vehicle is out of control.
- Shift the gear to neutral and apply the brakes until the vehicle stops
- Turn to ignition to the ACC position (engine off) and get to the side of the road. You will lose power brakes and steering but will still be able to use those features. Do NOT turn the key to the off position as this will lock the steering wheel
- Luxury models with push button ignition can be shut off by holding the button down for at least three seconds
Owners of these affected models should have received a notice from Toyota. If not, visit your local Toyota dealer for more information.
