Distracted and reckless driving is the number one cause of teen deaths in America.
Every year, approximately 4,000 teens die in fatal car accidents. Another 400,000 are seriously injured.
This isn’t comforting for parents as they hand their children the car keys for the first time. However, here are several tips you can follow to encourage your teen to be safe on the road so that they don’t become a statistic:
Limit cell phone use
Be stern with your teen regarding this distraction. Enforce consequences if they text or talk on the phone while driving. Set the example when you’re driving by having your full attention on the road rather than on your phone.
Teach safe driving skills
Don’t rely solely on school programs to teach your teen road safety. Before your child turns 16, teach them about road signs, proper driving techniques and safety issues while they ride with you.
Go back to the basics
Tell your tean that wearing seatbelts at all times is expected and using turn signals to let other drivers know your intentions is necessary. Reiterate the importance of obeying speed limits and not tailgating. Teaching your teen how to change a flat tire is a good idea as well.
Pack an emergency kit
Make sure your teen has any necessary items in case of emergency such as blankets, water, a flashlight and tools.
