Any car accident can be incredibly stressful and upsetting. If you’re in an accident while traveling in another state and away from all of your familiar surroundings, it can cause sheer panic!
There are several steps you must take following an out-of-state car accident. Most are the same steps you would take if the accident occurred in your own backyard, with a few differences.
- Call the police immediately. It is extremely important to file a police report in the event of a collision, even if you have not been injured.
- Seek medical attention. If there are obvious injuries, seek medical help as soon as possible. You may need to call your health insurance company to find a network healthcare provider nearby if you can’t make it home to your regular physician. Follow the doctor’s orders and document all information.
- Call your insurance company. Explain to your insurer the full situation. If you have a good provider, they will guide you through the process and give you options for temporary transportation, possible housing and medical attention.
- Pictures and witnesses. Take snapshots and/or video of the accident scene, the damage to your vehicle, as well as any harm to you or a passenger in the vehicle. Also, get contact information from several witnesses who saw the accident and would be willing to write a statement.
- Never admit fault. Be very careful what you say. Never admit that you did anything wrong.
- Call a lawyer in your state. Even though you have had an accident out-of-state, meet with a reputable lawyer in the state where you reside once you get back. They will know how to approach accident laws in other states and provide other vital information to building your case.
If you have been involved in an out-of-state accident, you will likely need to discuss your case with a car accident and personal injury attorney who can help guide you through this difficult situation.
